Around 50 automobiles have been smeared with what seems to be human blood in the German municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.

Cars, walls and postboxes were defaced, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they reported in a release.

Law enforcement say they were notified during the night on Wednesday, when a resident noticed that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a reddish fluid.

The substance had been drawn in the form of a swastika, they stated.

Police then found multiple other smeared vehicles and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.

Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under legislation prohibiting the public display of Nazi symbols.

Police report early analysis indicate the fluid was probably human bodily fluid.

"Currently there is no indication as to where it came from; authorities are currently not informed of any harm in relation with the event," they added.

Municipal representatives stated they were working "to unravel the mystery" and have asked to the residents for tips.

A high-ranking representative stated the vandalism rendered him stunned and needed to be resolved promptly.

"This incident strikes at the center of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the right-wing terrorist attack five years ago," he posted on online, recalling the killing of nine people by a gunman aiming at individuals of migrant background in five years prior.
