Trump's Woke Warning Misses Europe's Real Danger: Technological Stagnation.

The recent US national security strategy offers a misguided assessment of the European Union. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "woke" agendas represent an existential threat to European civilization. Yet, this perspective is based on a fundamental misinterpretation of the reality. The true challenge facing Europe is not cultural but technological and economic backwardness.

A Glaring Economic Divide Between the US and Europe

Statistics paint a stark picture. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by 87%, compared to a mere thirteen and a half percent increase for the European Union. During this period, European income per person fell from 76.5% to just half of the US level. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now boasts a greater average income than several leading EU nations like Italy and France.

Today, about 50% of the world’s top fifty tech companies are US-based, while a mere four are European.

The Innovation Shortfall: A Critical Question

This widening disparity is driven by superior efficiency gains in the United States, fueled by technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of world technology leadership is overwhelmingly US-centric. Over the past five decades, hundreds of American startups have grown into enterprises valued at more than ten billion dollars, compared with only fourteen in the European continent.

This disparity raises a vital issue: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, where does Europe stand? Most analysts concede it is essentially a two-horse race between the United States and China, with Europe entering at a significant handicap.

Root Causes of Europe's Technological Lag

Several key reasons account for this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a far deeper and more dynamic network for funding startups. The EU has yet to establish a genuine unified investment market, which limits the scale of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented rules hinder Europe. A American entrepreneur can introduce a product under a single set of laws to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a bigger population, is divided among 27 different national regimes, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was once viewed with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's long-term lack of spending in defense has weakened its ability in pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

Despite these hurdles, there are reasons for hope. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have started to advance substantial change. Key analyses on EU competitiveness and the single market point to the need for sweeping reforms.

Given appropriate policies and rule changes, Europe's strengths could support much higher degrees of commercial innovation.

Europe still possesses significant strengths: skilled human capital, excellent education systems, and world-class research institutions. Alongside a large internal market and substantial household savings, these elements have the potential to trigger a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if the EU does not become the leader in developing next-generation technologies, it can still significantly boost economic output by implementing and tailoring advancements from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

Europe now faces a decisive moment. As the saying goes, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, the continent's technological decline has been steady. However, if it fails to take decisive action to address its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could give way to a sudden and irreversible decline in world influence.
