Citizens urged to remain inside as powerful gusts batter the nation.

Severe winds reaching velocities of approximately 155km/h (96mph) have caused around 90,000 households experiencing outages and led agencies to halt in excess of 100 flights, based on regional news sources.

The winds are influencing the whole southern region and southern sections of the North Island, according to the national weather agency.

New Zealand authorities have issued rare severe gust advisories - the most severe warning - in key areas encompassing Canterbury and Wellington.

People have been urged to remain inside, avoid travel, and prepare for additional power and communication outages.

Extensive Destruction and Emergency Measures

This outage seems to be impacting residences predominantly in the South Island, although officials report that power was being slowly brought back.

Domestic outlets have reported that in some places structures have suffered roof damage, while power lines and trees have been toppled by the gales.

Within the capital, a man was fatally injured after being hit by a wooden fragment at a frequent walking route on earlier this week.

Meanwhile in Wellington, a woman was blown onto oncoming traffic on a street by a powerful blast, in a event that was recorded in a viral dashcam video.

Flights in and out of the urban area have been suspended as a result of the gusts, while various routes and public facilities are shut down.

Simultaneously authorities in Canterbury have declared a state of emergency, to facilitate disaster response efforts.

Strike Action Amid Extreme Conditions

The powerful gales on today coincide with many of school staff, physicians and civil servants are engaged in what has been termed a "significant labor action", requesting higher wages and enhanced employment terms.

But the intense climate has forced them to alter some of their plans, with various open-air gatherings relocated inside or called off.

Similar gusts are also sweeping the neighboring country, bringing a high-temperature event to the remote areas.

Agencies have declared burning restrictions for apprehension regarding bushfires.
