Coaching a Baby to Develop into an 'English Gentleman' – Does It Justify the Money?

Child education concept
The firm behind the listing states that what seems like "luxury or oddity" is actually "deliberate commitment in early-stage education".

"A household based in north London wants to find an extraordinary and skilled tutor to support their most junior child on his first steps to turning into an English gentleman."

When reading this post, you might naturally overlook the term "beginning" as mere an expression.

Yet, it might be the crucial element of this unique job advert, as it seeks to hire a teacher for a 12-month-old.

Many of responses have now been sent in since the unnamed family published their request for the £180,000 per year tutor, who has to be "a uniquely qualified person".

During the past few weeks, the advert has received notice in the press, with many questioning why?

Innovative Idea

A tutoring expert, head and founder of a global tutoring firm, which is helping the family in their quest, stated that notwithstanding early doubt, he viewed the idea "far sighted", and "progressive".

When he met the family, he noted they recognized the unusual nature of their demand, and how young their son is.

But, they clarified that they "didn't want to wait any longer" to engage a tutor, as they had waited until their elder sibling was five, and by that point "cultural bias had already become established".

But what does the family refer to by "cultural bias"?

It's "everything", Adam answered. "The manner you eat, the manner you speak".

He explained the elder child had absorbed "very nuanced, body language" from the family, and had taken on their cultural ways. The family informed him they wished to avoid this pattern to repeat itself with their new baby.

The strategy: To bring in a British tutor, who needs to speak with RP, to guide the baby from day one.

Tutoring discussion
The education firm state the advert has started a broader debate about how parents view schooling, elitism and the function of cultural environment in development.

Subtle Influence

"Much of the development at the start here is rather osmotic," said Adam.

It's through this natural absorption that the family are hoping the child will pick up the English characteristics they aim to impart.

Adam explained the tutor needed to be an individual who studied at "prestigious academies – comparable categories of schools as the family plan to send their son to".

"The educator just has to be the right kind of person, they'll be doing things they don't even know they're doing, effortlessly," he said.

Money No Object

The family informed Adam the successful candidate should ideally also have knowledge of or interest in riding, alpine skiing, the arts and instrumental training so as to influence the child in a broad spectrum of passions.

More than that though, he said the family desired the tutor to sign up the child on a variety of classes so the child would be "equestrian training and picking up an tool by the time they are approximately three years old".

In the family's minds, guiding their son become a "UK sophisticate" will lead to success and create opportunities.

"Considering the advantages and disadvantages of that, because it's undoubtedly a social class indicator," he comments.

Yet, despite all this guidance in "Britishness", would the child pick up alleged cultural influence from the globally influenced family he resides with in any case?

"Certainly", replied the CEO. "They understand this could fail, but they've just taken the view of, 'let's give it a go and let's go as soon as we can', because the expense of it is not a concern," he explained.

Idealistic and Unrealistic

There are some in the private teaching field who have similar concerns.

An education leader, head and founder of an educational organization, who also offer individual instructors, commented that "the process of embracing two identities, or actually, forming one's identity, is something that must be grown into, not designed."

The expert explained that he had relocated from Asia to the UK at the period of 7 years old, and had been raised experiencing and living dual heritages. He went on to learn at the University of Cambridge.

The executive was the first individual hailing from the People's Republic of China to be selected to the role of Treasurer of the Cambridge Union Society.

"The notion that one individual can function as a embodiment of UK identity, someone who can somehow impart the characteristics of a English gentleman onto a one-year-old child, seems to me optimistic and unfeasible," he stated.

"In my experience, employing a distinctly British tutor from babyhood will does not automatically create the outcome they want.

"I never had such a tutor, and nevertheless I have been privileged enough to enjoy many of the opportunities they hope for their son."

He stated: "The reality is, personal identity should not be forced from the outside influences; it must be embraced, and it must come from within."

Acquiring Englishness

Certainly, Britishness is something the expert believes can be taught – and marketed.

"I believe the reality that the global community regards us in this regard is something that we should be cherishing|valuing|appreciating
